Delhi All Set To Appoint New Mayors Today After MCD Elections

A month after the elections for the 250-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi is ready to appoint its new mayors today.

Following the high-stakes municipal elections, the newly elected councilors will take the oath of office in the first municipal building. 

AAP has nominated Shelly Oberoi and Ashu Thakur to run for mayor. The primary candidate for the party is Oberoi. Rekha Gupta, in contrast, is the BJP contender for the top position.

In the civic council that was reunified last year, the Bharatiya Janata Party had ruled for 15 years before the ruling Aam Aadmi Party gained 134 seats in the polls on December 4. Congress won nine seats, and the saffron party secured 104 to finish in second place.

Today, one month after the 250-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, the nation’s capital will have a new mayor. 

Following the crucial civic elections, the newly elected council members will take an oath in the first municipal house. The elections for mayor and deputy mayor will take place during this session.

Jalaj Kumar and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal are the candidates put forth by the Aam Aadmi Party for the position of deputy mayor. Kamal Bagri is the candidate for the saffron party in the election.

Both the BJP and AAP had blamed one another of attempting to recruit opposition council members ahead of the mayoral elections. 

The Delhi Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint from BJP councilor Monica Pant alleging that AAP leader Shikha Garg tried to bribe her into switching sides. 

While the BJP claimed that a “agent” of Kejriwal was attempting to abduct its council members, the CM asserted that the BJP might pay AAP council members between 10 and 50 lakh rupees to defect.
