Dainik Bhaskar group’s offices get stormed by IT raids

Dainik Bhaskar group, one of India’s leading and largest media house has come under radar of Income Tax Department. Today the group’s offices across many locations including Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat got raided and searched by the IT Department. Sources reveal that raids and search operations by the I-T teams are being conducted at the group’s offices in Delhi, Bhopal and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Jaipur in Rajasthan, and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Mumbai in Maharashtra and other locations also.

Over 30 locations that include residential premises and offices of group promoters are being raided by teams of over 100 taxmen under a joint operation. In Bhopal, the residence of Sudhir Aggarwal, the Bhaskar group’s promoter was also searched by the IT team. 

Taking on its website, the group that is one of largest circulating Hindi daily stated, “scared of its coverage of floating dead bodies in the river Ganges during the pandemic, the government launched raids on the Bhaskar group.” It added that taxmen have also seized mobile phones of its employees whose residences too they have raided. The group also claimed that no woman was part of the raiding team at residences.

The IT Department however, maintains that raids are being conducted following a tip-off received by department that group and its various companies are evading taxes.

Dainik Bhaskar is headquartered in Madhya Pradesh and has more than 60 editions that are operating from various states in many languages. Dainik Bhaskar and its other languages’ daily newspapers had aggressively reported the catastrophic scale of Covid-19 second wave in April – May that had wrecked havoc across the nation. This had bared open the overwhelmed healthcare system of India and raised questions on micro management of the pandemic. 

Many Chief Ministers including Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan and Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi have condemned that raids by IT Department.
