Cyclone Michaung To Hit Andhra Pradesh Today, After Troubling Chennai

Chennai, the capital and a major city in Tamil Nadu, has faced harsh weather conditions due to Cyclone Michaung. Sadly, eight people have lost their lives in various incidents related to the cyclone.

Among these, two were sadly electrocuted and another person died due to a tree falling on them in Besant Nagar, an upscale area of Chennai.

The city has been struggling with waterlogged streets and roads since Monday’s heavy rains. Notably, the bridge in Nerkundram is currently surrounded by water overflowing from the Koovam River. This overflowing has been severe enough to disrupt normal life in several parts of the city.

In a positive development, the Chennai Airport, which had to close due to the heavy rains and flooding, has resumed operations since 9 am on Tuesday. This is a relief for many travelers and for the city’s connectivity.

Turning our attention to Andhra Pradesh, Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall near Bapatla today around noon. Remember, this is the first major cyclone to hit the region since Cyclone Gulab in September 2021.

The authorities are taking proactive steps to mitigate the impact. Nearly 900 people from vulnerable areas along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh have been evacuated to safer places.

The district administration has set up 21 cyclone shelters to accommodate these evacuees. Additionally, there have been reports of uprooted trees, and overflowing bridges and culverts in the district.

The weather department predicts that the cyclone will bring very heavy rainfall and strong winds, with speeds ranging from 90-100 kmph, and gusting up to 110 kmph.

This severe weather is expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh both today and tomorrow, with some areas even likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall.
