Coronavirus: Delhi re-emerges as highest Covid-19 cases contributor after four months

Friday marked re-emergence of Delhi as the highest Covid-19 cases contributor in India. The capital recorded 7,178 cases on Friday, the highest in its record for first time in over four months. Last time when Delhi had been the highest contributor of cases was on 23rd June with its tally of  3,947 new cases.

This was the time when Delhi was at its peak of Covid-19 first wave and had a total caseload of 70,000. This was second highest, after Maharashtra which was recording 4000 cases per day.

Post June 23 the cases in Delhi had started to steadily decline. For at least one month Delhi consistently reported lesser number of new Covid-19 cases and kept on declining progressively. At one point the capital was reporting cases below 1000 and total active cases tally had come down to 10,000, indicating the worst to be over for Delhi. But since then the capital city has witnessed two more peaks of Covid-19 infection, with each being higher than the previous one.

Last four days have been exceptionally worrying with Delhi recording over 6700 new cases every day – the highest any city has reported in India. Delhi is now standing with 40,000 active cases count, following Maharashtra and Kerala.

Though the country is recording high number of cases, the recovery number has remained high too. This has been contributory in bringing down the active cases to 5.16 lakh only. Maharashtra holds 20% of the total active cases and Kerala around 15%.

On a global level, United States became the first country on Friday to record over 1 lakh cases (1.06 lakh). The nation is standing at top of the chart with more than 93.87 lakh cases of active cases. India, which was following US closely on number 2 with most active cases, was expected to be the first country to cross the 1 lakh mark after it had started reporting over 90,000 cases per day in September. But India has shown steady fall in cases and now with more recoveries being recorded of active cases, the gap between India and US is increasing of active cases tally.
