It’s happened for the ninth time in 10 days and Congress isn’t going to keep quiet about it as it raises a hue and cry over raised fuel prices. As the Ukraine war continues and India is pressured not to buy fuel from Russia, the prices of diesel and petrol have again gone up this week.
In Mumbai, the price of petrol rose to Rs 116.72 per litre, while diesel rate went up to Rs 100.94. In Delhi too, a litre of petrol now costs Rs 101.81 and diesel Rs 93.07 after a price hike of 80 paise. In Kolkata, too, the price of petrol has climbed by 83 paise to Rs 111.35 pe litre and diesel rate rose by 80 paise to Rs 96.22. While fuel prices in India are regulated by oil marketing companies, it has often been observed that the rates remain unchanged during elections and are hiked after the result day.
The recent protests include Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.
The Congress leaders shouted slogans and held placards saying “Roll back fuel price hike” and “Chunav khatm, loot chalu [With the elections over, the loot has begun]”.
The Congress opposition and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have called the constant price hike as ‘loot’ and ‘criminal assault’ respectively. All Parliamentarians sat on strike shouting over need to roll back prices from the Narendra Modi government. Mr. Rahul Gandhi has gone ahead and said that the government is making millions over this price hike duping the already poor India. Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet on Thursday, also compared the cost of fuel with neighbouring countries. He noted that India has the highest rates, and Pakistan the lowest, where petrol costs Rs 62.38 per litre. Taking its protest to the next level, the Congress has also launched a Twitter campaign, called ‘Mehangai Mukt Bharat’ (price rise-free India). Party leaders and state units of the Congress put up posts against the rising fuel prices using the hashtag.
