Congress’ Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in Srinagar for ‘Personal Visit’

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi will be in Srinagar for a “personal visit”. The Congress scion will reach a tourist resort in Sonamarg, Friday afternoon, where he will be received by the leaders of the party’s J&K unit.

Then he will head for the Nigeen Lake in Srinagar where he will stay at a houseboat. Rahul Gandhi would be joined by mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra on Saturday.

Vikar Rasool Wani, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president, said the Gandhi’s will be in the valley on a two-day personal visit. He said the two senior leaders will have “no political engagement or meeting” with any party leaders in Srinagar during the “family tour”. “Rahul has been in the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh the past one week and will be leaving for Srinagar after addressing a public rally in Kargil Friday morning.” In Kargil, Rahul will lay a wreath at the war memorial to honor the war martyrs. On his way to Srinagar, the young leader is expected to stopover in Drass for a brief interaction with the people.

He has been in Ladakh since August 17, his first visit to the region since it was granted UT status after being torn out from Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019 when the central government abrogated the conflicted region’s special status under Article 370.

Rahul said there have been numerous grievances – residents are dissatisfied with their current status, and desire representation. Moreover, there are concerns about unemployment and inflation. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is hearing the Article 370 case; a five-judge bench, presided by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, hearing petitions challenging the Centre’s 2019 decision to revoke the special status and bifurcate the erstwhile state into two UTs.
