Common Entrance Exam To Make College Admissions A Breeze

In the wake of the kind of pressure that children have faced in Covid times, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to let children seek admissions in colleges through a central written exam.

This CUET will be conducted in the first week of July and the application process will start in the first week of April, the UGC chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumarhas confirmed to media sources. A multiple-choice computer-based examination will now make life easy for children seeking college admissions and do away with the stressful rigmarole of achieving high scores of as much as 100percent.

The test will also not need any high computer proficiency and can also be conducted over a smartphone. The common exam will provide a level-playing ground to all the students across the country,” Mr. Kumar said and added that he hopes students will now be able to focus more on learning rather than just trying to score the highest marks in class 12 exams.

The test, it is said, will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and will remain compulsory for all the central universities. The UGC is also asking all state, Deemed-to-be, and private universities to use the test scores for admissions to undergraduate programs across the country.

The strange part however remains is that while universities cannot turn down children on any pretext, if they have passed the central exam; they do remain free to set a minimum benchmark for class 12 marks in deciding eligibility. “The reservation policy of the universities will not be impacted due to the common test. The universities can enroll candidates for the general seats as well as for the reserved seats on the basis of CUET scores. It will not impact the existing admission and reservation policy,” Mr. Kumar added.
