The Department of Science and Technology announced on Wednesday that a group of scientists from India and Sri Lanka would be collaborating for a plethora of research. The arenas of research would include food, information technology, and communications technology.
“Nine teams consisting of scientists from India and Sri Lanka will work on focused research in areas like food technology, plant-based medicines, metrology, space research and applications, robotics and automation, industrial electronics, renewable energy, waste management, and information and communication technology,” the Department of Science and Technology added.
DST added that both the teams from India and Sri Lanka have been provided with collaborative support from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the State Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation of Sri Lanka.
In 2008, the governments of India and Sri Lanka had launched a proposal under the umbrella of inter-governmental cooperation in the sector of Science and Technology. This collaboration of scientists from both nations is a result of that proposal.
The Science and Technology cooperation between the two nations was initiated and brought to the pipeline through discussions by India Sri Lanka Sub-Commission on Science and Technology under the inter-governmental India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission. In a meeting held in Colombo in November 2010, the Commission had recommended the development of a program that would enable cooperation in Science and Technology, to enable mutual interests like using space technology of Indian satellites for societal services. Furthermore, India and Sri Lanka have also decided on three of the 193 common proposals received for workshop proposals.
DST added that as of now, 27 joint research projects in sectors of food technology, materials and plant based medicine, and industrial electronics.
