Chennai’s Air Quality Takes a Hit After Deepavali Celebrations

Air quality in Chennai took a dip the morning after Diwali celebration with firecracker. It left the city with higher pollution levels. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), two areas recorded “poor” air quality today, while most of the city showed “moderate” AQI levels.

According to DTNext, Between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., Perungudi recorded an AQI of 235, putting it in the “poor” category. Velachery followed with an AQI of 205, also marked as “poor.”

Other areas in the city including Alandur recorded AQI 188, Arumbakkam  recorded AQI 172, Kodungaiyur  recorded AQI 106, and Manali  recorded AQI 106, showed “moderate” AQI levels, meaning they can cause breathing discomfort for people with respiratory conditions. Royapuram, which had earlier registered “poor” air quality, improved to a level of 81, a “moderate” status.

Know about the ranges of AQI:

AQI levels from 51-100 are considered as satisfactory, while levels from 101-200 are moderate and may impact sensitive groups. Levels from 201-300 fall under “poor” and can affect most people, especially with prolonged exposure.

Overall the average AQI of Chennai was recorded at 156 putting the city in the moderate range.
