Chennai Metro Introduces Driverless Trains, A Leap Into the Future

Chennai Metro is set to launch driverless trains as part of its Phase Two expansion of metro in the city. French mobility company Alstom is delivering 36 new trains named Metropolis. The production will begin in February. The trains will run on the 26 km route between Poonamallee Bypass and Light House, each with three cars.

Railway technology confirmed the news.UNI also shared the news update.

These driverless trains have advanced systems like Automatic Train Operation  and Automatic Train Protection these systems will allow them to function and run without a driver on board. But driverless doesn’t mean there’s no human involvement. There will be operators at the control center to monitor the driverless trains constantly and they will be ready to step in if needed. They can also communicate with passengers through the intercom ensuring safety and assistance.

While the train uses intelligent automation, it’s not fully autonomous like some vehicles. The train’s systems communicate with sensors and trackside components to make sure everything runs smoothly. Before the train sets off, the control center checks the route to confirm it’s safe. Once that’s done, the onboard system handles everything from speed control to stopping at stations and aligning doors properly.
