Chennai Court Sentences Three to 12 Years for Ganja Possession

A special court in Chennai has sentenced three men to 12 years in prison for possessing 60 kg of ganja. The Elephant Gate police arrested those three men in the year of 2022. They were found guilty on the charges on Friday.

The convicted individuals are D Mohan Kumar of age 43 and JK Stanly, age 28. These both are from Dindigul district, and the third men is Peruri Seenu of age 33, he is from East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh.  With the imprisonment court also imposed a total fine of Rs 6.3 lakh on these three prisoners.

The case began on April 30, 2022, when police received a tip-off about ganja being transported from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu. Officers stopped an SUV near Walltax Road and discovered 60 kg of ganja in three bags.

The defense lawyers for Kumar and Stanly argued that the police did not have any independent witnesses. However the court ruled that this was not a major issue in drug cases as witnesses often do not come forward.

Peruri Seenu testified in his own defense claiming he was a used car salesman who was wrongfully picked up by police. Despite his claims, the court found him guilty based on the evidence.

The Greater Chennai Police praised the Elephant Gate police team for their successful conviction of the accused.
