Telugu Desam Party (TDP) of Andhra Pradesh has declared it will support the parliamentary bill to overturn a Supreme Court decision on who controls Delhi’s bureaucrats, despite previously opposing it. This is a boost for the BJP-led government at the center in its efforts to do so.
The TDP, which split from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2018 and filed a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, now intends to vote in favor of the administration rather than the opposition on the no-confidence vote.
With three Lok Sabha members and one Rajya Sabha member, the TDP’s backing will help the government pass the NCT Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2023, which was already expected to pass. This indicates that the opposition TDP and the ruling YSRCP, both regional parties in Andhra Pradesh, are now in support of the administration.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, suffered a setback in its opposition to the Delhi services bill as a day earlier, the support of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, ensured that the bill would easily pass the halfway point in parliament.
The BJP-led NDA does not have a full majority on its own in the upper house, so the BJD will help the government pass the halfway point with its nine Rajya Sabha MPs.
With nine representatives in the Rajya Sabha and 22 in the Lok Sabha, Jagan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party has already declared its support for the government on this important bill.
The Rajya Sabha has 120 members, and the BJP-led government now has 127 thanks to the support of the BJD, YSRCP, TDP, and Mayawati’s BSP.
The bill, which will replace the contentious Delhi services ordinance, is anticipated to receive opposition votes from approximately 109 MPs, including members of the 26-member opposition alliance INDIA and some Independents.

The Supreme Court’s ruling that the elected government in Delhi, not the center, controls the transfer and appointment of bureaucrats is replaced by the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) bill. This ordinance was issued by the center to circumvent the Supreme Court’s ruling.
According to the Delhi Services Bill, the central government will have the authority to make rules regarding issues pertaining to the tenure, salaries, transfers, or postings of officers in Delhi and will also have the authority to make decisions regarding any action or investigation against officers.
