Center announces relaxations in AFSPA dominated places

On Thursday, the Indian government decided to reduce the number of disturbed regions, places or cities in the AFSPA dominated states.

The states with an active Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur and some of the parts here will see reduction in their presence. The decision to reduce the presence of high-security officials in the northeastern states has been taken after over a decade.

It is a major step towards normalizing things in the country. While announcing the decision, the government clarified that its decision will be put into effect from April 1, 2022 but also stressed that the act has not yet been completely removed. These are only certain parts that were decided to be chopped off from the list.

Home Minister Amit Shah took to twitter to say, “In a significant step, GoI under the decisive leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji has decided to reduce disturbed areas under Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades.”

He explained the situation saying that the situation has been taken as the government found that in certain areas, there has been an improvement in the security situation and that essentially led to a “fast-tracked development”. Hence the center decided that the time might be right to end the insurgency and bring peace in the region.
