CBSE cancels Class 10 Board exams, postpones Class 12 exams

The Education Ministry has taken the decision in the wake of surging COVID-19 cases in India

In a major development, the CBSE Class 10 board examinations have been canceled and Class 12 board exams have been postponed till May 30 by the Ministry of Education. This decision has been taken by the Centre in the wake of surging COVID-19 infections in the country. 

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and other senior ministry officials to review the CBSE board examinations, amid the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic situation in India. 

Taking to Twitter, the Education Minister noted that CBSE will develop an objective criterion to prepare the results of Class 10 students. 

“Any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allocated to him/her on this basis will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold the exams,” the minister said in a series of tweets. 

For Class 12 exams, the Board will review the situation on June 1, following which a fresh schedule will be shared for conducting the examinations. 

“A notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of the examinations,” Dr Pokhriyal added. 

Previously, the Class 10 exams were scheduled between May 4 and June 7, while Class 12 exams were set to take place between May 4 and June 15. More than 6 lakh students were set to write their board exams this year, with the participation of around 1 lakh teachers in the process. 

In view of an unprecedented rise in Coronavirus cases in India, the chorus for postponing or cancelling Class 10 and 12 board exams also surged across the diaspora. From Congress party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, a number of leaders urged the Centre to cancel/postpone the CBSE board exams. On Tuesday, the Delhi CM urged the Centre to cancel offline CBSE exams, noting that the exam centres could turn into COVID-19 hotspots. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh also wrote to the Centre, requesting the postponement of board exams.

In addition, students, parents, and a number of state governments joined the chorus, appealing to the Modi government to reconsider the schedule for offline CBSE board exams in order to ensure the safety of students. More than two lakh students signed an online petition demanding the cancellation of offline papers or postponement at the time.

Earlier, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh postponed the state board exams for classes 10 and 12 as the COVID-19 situation worsened in the state.
