Can You Really Afford a Dream Home? Viral Post Exposes Middle-Class Struggles in Urban India

A post on X is getting viral in India, it is not something about celebrity, movie release, thrill or murder mystery, the X post is talking about a very common but serios issue of nowadays. It is “how to buy a dream house?” It is questioning the tax system and also the high cost living in metro cities.

A recent viral post on X is shared by Chennai-based financial planner D Muthukrishnan. He tells the story of a couple earning a combined Rs 1.5 lakh per month but still struggling to achieve their dream of owning a home in the city.

The income is high, and the couple is running a clinic and live in an upscale area of Chennai. They are facing big expenses like commercial electricity charges and steep property taxes. The post has raised the conversations about the growing economic pressure on middle-class families especially in metro cities, the post is underscoring the gap between income and the rising cost of living.

According to the post ”After EMI and all expenses, they together make Rs 1,50,000 a month – say husband Rs 1 lakh and wife Rs 50k a month. I’m talking about a successful professional couple in a city like Chennai. Earning money and creating wealth is very difficult in India. They dream of owning a home one day. Even for people like them, it’s a dream.”

After the post public reactions started to coming out. One user commented, ”It’s a tough reality, especially in metro cities. The cost of living vs income gap is widening, and it feels like no matter how hard you work, owning a home remains a distant dream for many in urban India.”

Another user wrote in the comment section ”Educated white-collar workers who don’t cut corners and pay legit rates (income, electricity, GST) don’t have a chance in hell to earn and create generational wealth.”
