Call off-street protests, Wrestlers opt for legal battle against WFI chief!

DELHI: The protesting wrestlers have declared that their match against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will take place in court rather than on the streets, a day after saying they could return to the streets to continue their agitation against the WFI president. Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia, three of India’s top wrestlers, tweeted in unison that the government had followed through on its promise to charge Singh. So, Call off-street protests, Wrestlers opt for a legal battle against WFI chief!

The tweet said, “In this case, the wrestlers’ fight will go on until justice is done, but it will be in court, not on the road.”The election process for the WFI reform has begun, as promised. We’ll keep an eye on whether the government honors its commitments in relation to the elections on July 11th.

Soon after the statement came out, Vinesh and Sakshi tweeted that they were going to take a few days off from social media. Yogeshwar Dutt is a former wrestler who is now a BJP leader. Vinesh, Sakshi, and Bajrang attacked him in a live social media address for questioning the IOA ad hoc panel’s decision to exempt them from Asian Games trials.

The wrestlers stated in the nearly 40-minute speech that they intend to continue fighting Singh and will decide how to do so after reviewing the chargesheet that Singh has filed.

“It will go on until Brij Bhushan is imprisoned and makes amends for his transgressions. A copy of the chargesheet is what we are awaiting. We will assess its strength to ensure justice. We will choose whether to risk our lives or remain seated on the road. We are silent because of this. We’re still at odds,” she had declared.

Vinesh claimed that Dutt was pursuing them out of self-interest. “Wrestlers were scared to come to the second protest (on April 23) because of you (Dutt). You threaten them with losing their jobs if they don’t comply. People claimed to be with us but couldn’t come because of compulsions, according to Vinesh.

I’ll explain why you’re acting in this way. You might have sided with Brij Bhushan because he offered you the position of WFI President.

After being evicted from Jantar Mantar on May 28, the wrestlers suspended their protest until June 15 after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur promised a chargesheet against Singh and that none of his family members would be allowed to run in WFI elections.

On May 28, Delhi Police arrested the wrestlers for lawbreaking after 38 days on Jantar Mantar. Farmers, khap panchayats, and others supported them.

After Thakur promised to look into their claims of sexual harassment and intimidation against 66-year-old Singh, a six-time BJP MP, they first arrived at Jantar Mantar on January 18 and suspended their three-day sit-in.
