CAG of India has started a special audit to find out if there were any administrative or financial mistakes made when Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence was renovated. May this put him in new legal trouble? The action is in response to a request made in this regard to CAG by the Union Government.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), taking note of a May 24 letter received from the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat that pointed out ostensible financial irregularities in the renovation of the CM’s official residence, recommended a special audit amid the ongoing dispute between the Delhi Government and the Centre over the ordinance issue.
In the letter to the MHA, Delhi L-G VK Saxena claimed that after the media brought attention to the alleged irregularities, the Chief Secretary, on his orders, submitted two factual reports—one on April 27 and the other on May 12—detailing deviations and violations of rules and regulations by the Delhi Public Works Department for renovation of the CM’s residence in cooperation with the minister in charge of PWD.
The L-G emphasised that the violations occurred, as the report noted, among other things, at the CM’s wife’s command during the height of the pandemic.
“Records show that split approvals of less than Rs 10 crore were given each time to avoid approvals from the Principal Secretary, PWD, who has been given the power to give financial approvals of more than Rs 10 crore,” the report said. They were said to have found a few more strange things.
