Cabinet Reshuffle: Modi cabinet gets a new look with key ministries hit by pandemic progress with new faces

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has handpicked young and fresh faces for his reshuffled cabinet. The key ministries that saw a major impact during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically during the catastrophic second wave, have welcomed new leaders.

In an attempt to re-energize the affected sectors, ranging from health, education, labor, civil aviation to IT and petroleum, Modi on Wednesday brought a significant reshuffling and expansion of cabinet roughly over two years after coming into the office for the second term. This has been the biggest ever expansion of the Council of Ministers. 

The most significant appointments include that of Wharton educated Ashwini Vaishnav for IT and Communications, Health to Mansukh Mandaviya, Civil Aviation to Jyotiraditya Scindia, Education and Skill Development to Dharmendra Pradhan, Environment, Labour and Employment to Bhupendra Yadav, Information and Broadcasting to Anurag Thakur and Law to Kiren Rijiju.

The worth noting point is that all of them are under 55 years of age. Hardeep Puri has been elevated to Cabinet rank and given Petroleum, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

The newly formed Ministry of Cooperation has been entrusted under former Home Minister Amit Shah. The role has become even more significant and diverse as the cooperation ministry will cross over state borders and require extreme coordination. 

Keeping the agenda of technology boom on priority, PM Modi has entrusted the ministries of communications, electronics, and information technology as well as Railways to the bureaucrat-turned-politician Vaishnav. The 51-year-old former IAS officer and holds degrees from IIT Kanpur and Wharton Business School. 

Addressing the newly inducted ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that ministers must balance interests around Atmanirbhar Bharat along with attracting foreign investment in IT and electronic sectors. 

Piyush Goyal has been stripped of railways, but continues with commerce and industry, consumer affairs, food and public distribution, along with being given the textile ministry.
