BS Yediyurappa Calls It ‘Quit’ As Karnataka Chief Minister

In a sudden change of events, the Karnataka Chief Minister has put in his papers, saying “no one pressurized me”. Mr. BS Yediyurappa is also a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. He has been asked to keep serving as a caretaker Chief Minister while a new one takes oath, according to confirmed media sources.

He submitted his resignation to Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot. Mr. Yediyurappa has not intentions of letting his party down and has plans to keep serving it in winning the 2023 elections.

Considered a Lingayat strongman, Yediyurappa’s resignations coincides with his visit to the Centre last week. He has publicly thanked seniors in the party for their generosity for allowing him to serve as the CM so far. He said he is looking forward to supporting the new CM to be appointed.

There are rumors of growing tiff and distance between Yediyurappa and the party ideology. Other issues being speculated upon are allegations of corruption, mishandling of Covid-19 crisis and his advancing years in age. Mr. Yediyurappa is 78 years of age. several MLAs within the BJP went public against the 78-year-old chief minister, with BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal first saying that the party cannot have Yediyurappa as the chief minister in the next elections. The CM has to be changed to keep the BJP alive in the state, Yatnal said.

State tourism minister CP Yogeshwara and Huballi-Dharwad MLA Arvind Bellad had also spoken out against the CM.

Yediyurappa also faced a sort of internal rebellion from former Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda, who was dropped from the Union Cabinet and returned to Bengaluru. During the welcome, slogans were heard that Gowda will be the next CM of Karnataka.

Mr. Yediyurappa is also said to have been involved in the illegal allocation of government land of almost 24 acres to private individuals. This was seen as a huge loss to the taxpayer. In April 2021, the Supreme Court is said to have put a stay on the criminal proceedings against him in the 10-year-old corruption case related to alleged illegal land denotification.

Under the Modi government, fair governance continues to rule the roost.
