The recent announcement by Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy regarding a Rs two lakh farm loan waiver has sparked a political debate, with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bharatiya Rythu Sangham (BRS) claiming credit for the decision. Both parties have argued that their agitations and pressure on the government led to this announcement, highlighting the issue of unfulfilled promises by the ruling Congress government.
The BJP and BRS have been vocal in their criticism of the Congress government’s failure to fulfil promises made to farmers and agricultural workers. BJP’s Rajya Sabha member K Laxman questioned the credibility of the Congress party, pointing out that promises like investment support of Rs 15,000 to farmers and financial assistance of Rs 12,000 to agriculture workers remain unfulfilled. BRS MLA T Harish Rao echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the CM’s announcement was a result of their agitation for loan waivers.
Amidst the claims of credit, there have been allegations of clandestine understandings and political manoeuvres. Revanth Reddy’s accusation of a secret understanding between BJP and BRS was met with denial and criticism from the opposition. BR’s leader Harish Rao demanded an apology from the CM for not honouring his promise to waive loans earlier, suggesting political motives behind the timing of the announcement.

Both the BJP and BRS have vowed to continue their efforts to hold the government accountable for its promises. State BJP spokesperson Amarnath highlighted the role of a recent fast led by state BJP president G Kishan Reddy in pressuring the government to announce the loan waiver. He described the announcement as a “first victory” for the BJP and emphasized the party’s commitment to ensuring the fulfilment of all promises made by the ruling Congress.
The announcement of a Rs two lakh farm loan waiver in Telangana has become a focal point for political debate, with the BJP and BRS claiming credit for the decision. While the opposition parties continue to criticize the Congress government for its unfulfilled promises, the CM has defended the delay in implementation citing the model code of conduct for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The political dynamics surrounding this issue are likely to remain contentious as the parties vie for support ahead of the elections.
