In a thrilling match, the Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale secured a spectacular comeback win in the mixed doubles final at the Asian Games.
They defeated the ninth-seeded duo from Chinese Taipei, Tsung-hao Huang and En-shuo Liang, with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.
The Indian team faced a tough start, losing the first set 2-6, as Rutuja was playing her first-ever final and the pressure was on.
However, they made a strong comeback in the second set and ultimately broke their opponents’ service at the end of the game.
Rutuja’s excellent net play helped level the match. In the decisive set, Rutuja secured the victory with a convincing performance in the shootout.
This win marked a significant achievement for India, maintaining their impressive record of winning at least one gold medal in each of the six Asian Games editions this century.
For Bopanna, it was his second Asian Games medal after winning men’s doubles gold in Jakarta in 2018.
It was also a comeback after he and partner Yuki Bhambri surprisingly exited early in the men’s doubles event. Rutuja, on the other hand, celebrated her maiden medal at the Asian Games.
This victory was India’s second tennis medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The pair of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni had earlier secured a silver medal in men’s doubles. It was also India’s third gold medal in mixed doubles at the Asian Games, with previous wins in 2006 and 2014.
We are very proud of Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale’s performance at the Asian Games. Their comeback victory in the mixed doubles final was nothing short of spectacular.
Bopanna and Bhosale continued their great skill and determination throughout their journey to the final. They defeated various opponents on their way to clinching the Tennis Gold for India.
Seeing Rutuja Bhosale win her first medal at the Asian Games is particularly heartening.
