‘Black Widow’ is struggling after its release on different platforms especially after complications arose in the agreement signed between Scarlett Johansson and the Disney network.
Scarlett Johansson has sued the streaming platform, Disney, over the movie’s streaming release. This was after Disney decided to release Black Widow on Disney Plus at the same time it hit theatres. Johansson believes that this move is contradicting the agreement rights and hence she resorted to the legal battle.
Johansson had filed a lawsuit on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court alleging that her contract was not obeyed when the platform decided not to solely release the movie in theaters. The lawyers on the actor’s side asserted that this has led to a sudden depression in ticket sales for the much-talked-about spinoff.
The contract also reportedly included that Johansson’s compensation was directly connected to the performance of the movie on the box office and if the movie crossed a certain benchmark, the Lucy actor will start to get a bonus amount for her work.
The documents filed in the LA court read, “Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson realized the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”
Ahead of the release of the movie, Disney has confirmed that the Black Widow will be premiering simultaneously on the studio’s subscription-based streaming service for a cost of $30. It will also be making it to the big screen. The decision to release it on the streaming platform was taken as in March, the box office was only starting to recover from the Covid-19 crisis and had audience capacity restrictions.
With its release, Black Widow managed to not only gain a lot of appreciation from the critics but also out did the expectation by creating a pandemic-era box office record with its $80 million debut in North America and earned an additional $78 million overseas. As for the online streaming, it attracted $60 million on Disney Plus. But after the online availability of the movie, Black Widow is on the verge of becoming the lowest-grossing Marvel movies of all time with an income of $319 million globally.
