The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has announced its candidate for the presidential election. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA has named Draupadi Murmu as its presidential candidate.
The opposition party announced the name of former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha as their representative candidate.
A meeting of the Parliamentary Board was held at the party headquarters on Tuesday to discuss the name of the NDA alliance candidate.
In this meeting 20 names were discussed and finally Murmu’s name was finalized. After this BJP President JP Nadda announced Murmu’s name.
Apart from Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari and many other leaders were present in this meeting.
Draupadi Murmu has been the Governor of Jharkhand. She has been a 2-times MLA from Odisha. She was a minister of state during the BJP and Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha.
She has handled many important departments like Transport, Commerce, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry in the Government of Odisha.
Draupadi Murmu was born on June 20, 1958 in Odisha. She graduated from Rama Devi College, Bhubaneswar. She has started her political career by becoming a counselor.
Praising Murmu, Prime Minister Modi tweeted,
“Draupadi Murmu devoted her life to social service and empowerment of the poor, downtrodden and oppressed.
She has rich administrative experience. I am sure she will prove to be a great President of our country.”
Murmu, who spent nearly two decades in politics and social service, became the first woman governor of Jharkhand in 2015.

She has been the first woman tribal leader to be appointed governor.
If Murmu wins the presidential election, she will be the country’s first tribal president. She will also become the second woman President of the country after Pratibha Patil.
If Murmu becomes the President of the country, then she will be the first President to come from the state of Odisha.
Voting for the presidency will be held on July 18 and, if necessary, the counting of votes will be done on July 21. On July 25, the 15th President of the country will take oath.
The last date for nominations for the elections has been kept on June 29 and scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on June 30. At the same time, the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be July 2.
If there is no consensus on the name of any candidate, then voting will be held on July 18.
