BJP headed for a big win in UP MLC election, but loses Varanasi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is heading for a big win in key state of Uttar Pradesh as results for MLC (Member of Legislative Council) election come in. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has congratulated winners of the biennial elections of UP’s Legislative Council as the BJP might be headed for a momentous victory.

After BJP registered a big win during Assembly elections, the party is now eyeing to become the single largest party in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council along with winning majority of seats in the Upper House.

UP Chief Minister tweeted, “BJP’s thumping victory in the MLC polls has again made it clear that the people of the state are with nationalism, development and good governance under the able guidance and leadership of the respected Prime Minister.”

Vote counting has been conducted for 27 seats of the Legislative Council. Out of the 36 vacant seats for which BJP candidates had contested unopposed, nine have already been won by the party. The 100 membered UP Legislative Council has 37 vacant seats. However, elections took place for 36 seats. BJP is already ahead in more than 30 seats.

The party has however, lost key seat of Varanasi. In Varanasi, Annapurna Singh, the wife of local strongman Brijesh Singh, has won the seat by a massive margin, the third place being secured BJP candidate. At this seat during 2016 election, Brijesh Singh had won the seat unopposed as an independent as BJP had not out up any candidate. This year, however, BJP had made the eastern UP polls a prestige issue.

Approximately 98.11 per cent of voters on Saturday had exercised their franchise to elect members to the state’s Legislative Council from 27 local body constituencies across 58 districts. The highest polling of 99.35 per cent was recorded in the Raebareli constituency, followed by Pratapgarh (99.25 per cent), Sitapur (99.2 per cent) and Barabanki (99.16 per cent). The Gorakhpur-Maharajganj constituency had recorded the lowest turnout at 96.5 per cent, followed by Etawah-Farrukhabad (96.65 per cent) and Muzaffarnagar-Saharanpur (96.69 per cent).
