BJP announces candidates for UP MLC electionBJP announces candidates for UP MLC election: On Monday, BJP announced names of its candidates for MLC elections in Uttar Pradesh which would be held in December. The chief election officer of Ajay Kumar Shukla  issued notification for elections for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. The election was issued for 11 seats including five Graduates’ and six Teachers’ constituencies. The scheduled date for the election is believed to be December 1 and for vote count December 3.

The election commission said that the last date for filing nominations is November 12 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is November 17. The scrutiny of nomination papers would taken up on November 13. 

Elections were organised as the tenure of 11 MLCs expired on May 6. MLCs who retired from Graduates’ constituencies were Kanti Singh (Lucknow division graduates’), Kedar Nath Singh (Varanasi division graduates’), Aseem Yadav (Agra division graduates’), Hem Singh Pundir (Meerut division graduates’) and Yagya Dutt Sharma (Allahabad-Jhansi division graduates’). The ones who retired from Teachers’ constituencies were Umesh Dwivedi (Lucknow division teachers’), Chet Narayan Singh (Varanasi division teachers’), Jagveer Kishor Jain (Agra division teachers’), Omprakash Sharma (Meerut division teachers’), Sanjay Kumar Mishra (Bareilly-Moradabad division teachers’) and Dhruv Kumar Tripathi (Gorakhpur-Faizabad division teachers’). 

In case of graduates’ constituency only graduates from any recognised Indian university, or ones having equivalent qualification, can vote. In a teachers’ constituency, only a full-time teacher in at least a secondary school or higher can vote. 

The UP Legislative Council, in total has 100 seat out of which 11 would be contests, while out of the rest 52 belong to Samajwadi Party, 19 to BJP, eight to BSP, two with Congress and one to Apna Dal (Sonelal). In case of The Teachers’ (shikshak dal) there is one MLC, while there are three Independents. Fourteen seats are vacant. 

Besides UP MLC candidates, BJP also issued list of candidates contesting for Maharashtra Legislative Council which holds in total 78 members seats. The elections would be held for its seven vacant graduate and teacher constituencies.
