Bihar Elections: Second phase records a turnout of over 44% voters till 3 pm

 Election Commission of India shows figures indicating voter turnout of 44.07% in second phase of Bihar’s State Assembly elections. Polling commenced at 7 am for the 94 assembly seats across Bihar’s 17districts on Tuesday as a part of the second phase. Covid-19 precautionary measures had been ensured by authorities for the people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed people of Bihar on Tuesday in Araria district of Bihar. He noted that enthusiasm of people regarding casting their votes despite the Covid-19 pandemic shows the deep rooted democracy in the country. PM Modi urged people to vote for BJP-JD(U) government and said, “now lawlessness and extortion are losing while development and rule of law are winning in Bihar.” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is also set to hold two rallies today.

During the Bihar’s assembly elections approximately 2.85 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes to decide fate of around 1500 candidates. The candidates part of the fray include 46 from BJP, 43 from Janata Dal (United), 56 from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and 24 from Congress. Furthermore, 5 candidates from Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP), part of NDA, is also in the fray.

From Mahagathbandhan, 3 Left parties are contesting for 14 seats – CPI-ML for six, CPI and CPM for 4 each.

RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav is seeking a re-election from Raghopur in Vaishali district. Tejashwi’s elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav is also in the fray who is shifting his base from Mahua in Vaishali to Hasanpur in Samastipur district.

Voters are beign provided certificates at polling booths by the officials as an appreciation for playing a role in the democratic exercise. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bihar tweeted, “Voters participating in voting were honoured by giving certificates – District Patna.”
