Bharat Bandh: 4 month anniversary to farmers protest against agriculture laws

To mark the four-month anniversary of the ongoing farmer’s protests against the agriculture laws, the farm unions under Samyukt Kisan Morcha have called for a day-long Bharat Bandh. 

Bharat Bandh has been called on Friday by the unions as the agitation at Delhi borders completes four months. The ‘bandh’ is also to reiterate their calls for a complete repeal of the agriculture laws that have been passed by both the Houses of Parliament. The strike will be in effect from 6 am to 6 pm. 

The bandh is called for across India, urging complete closure of shops, markets, malls, and institutions. Road and railway tracks will be blocked by the protestors, thereby suspending all transport and other services, except for emergency services like ambulances. The States that are having Assembly elections have been exempted from the bandh.

Friday morning bandh started with protesters hunkering down across 32 locations on railway tracks in Punjab and Haryana. As an aftermath four Shatabdi trains had been cancelled along with 31 other trains being detained, informed a Railway spokesperson. The 32 locations of disruption fall under Delhi, Ferozepur and Ambala railways divisions. 

Deepak Kumar, spokesperson of Northern Railways said, “As of 9 am Kisan agitators are sitting at 32 locations. Total 31 trains have been detained so far. Four Shatabdi trains have been canceled.” 

Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) President Gurnam Singh Charuni has urged protesters not to stop the movement of emergency services and essentials, like ambulances, milk vendors and waters canters. 

Traders body in Delhi, The Chambers of Trade and Industry, said though the traders support farmers protests, the shops would remain open on Friday in Delhi. CTI convenor Brijesh Goyal and chairman Subhash Khandelwal said in a statement, “We discussed it with business owners and traders. Most of them said they support the demands of the farmers and the Centre should find a solution to the issue. However, most traders want to keep their business establishments open on Friday as they have been accruing losses due to coronavirus.” 

Both carriageways of National Highway-24 passing through the Ghazipur border have been closed by the Delhi Police on Friday due to Bharat Bandh.
