Bhajan Lal Sharma: From A Village Sarpanch To Chief Minister of Rajasthan

Bhajan Lal Sharma is an inspiring story from the political landscape of Rajasthan. The 56-year-old leader has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. His journey to this esteemed position is truly remarkable, starting from very humble beginnings.

Three decades ago, Bhajan Lal Sharma began his public life as a sarpanch, a village head, in Bharatpur. From there, his political career gradually rose within the BJP. He was first elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Sanganer constituency in Jaipur, marking his first entry into the state legislature.

Sharma is known for his strong association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and has been a dedicated member of the BJP. His involvement in significant events, like the Ram temple agitation in Ayodhya and the protest for Kashmiri Pandits, highlights his active role in major national issues.

Despite holding various positions in the BJP and its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Sharma maintained a low profile. He worked silently and diligently, gaining appreciation from party leaders for his disciplined approach. His educational background includes a master’s degree in political science, and he also runs an agriculture supplies business.

Interestingly, just a short time before his selection as the Chief Minister, Sharma was not widely recognized as a contender for the post. The BJP had several prominent leaders like Vasundhara Raje and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who were considered potential candidates. However, Sharma’s unexpected rise to the forefront signifies a significant shift in the party’s leadership dynamics in Rajasthan.

His appointment as the Chief Minister came after the BJP’s strong performance in the recent Rajasthan assembly elections, where the party won 115 seats. Sharma’s swearing-in ceremony occurred amidst much anticipation and speculation about who would lead the state.
