BCCI Skips Fireworks For World Cup 2023 In Delhi, Mumbai

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, or BCCI, has made a big decision. There will be no fireworks in the World Cup cricket matches happening in Mumbai and Delhi. Usually, fireworks are part of the grand show at the end of the match. But this time, it’s different.

It’s because of the poor air quality in both cities. Mumbai and Delhi are facing serious air pollution problems. Bombay High Court recently pointed out that the air in Mumbai is getting worse.

In Delhi, the Air Quality Index, also known as AQI, has dropped to the ‘very poor’ category. This is bad news for everyone who lives in these cities.

These matches will take place without fireworks. India will play against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Bangladesh will play Sri Lanka at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on November 6. These are the two places where fireworks will not light up the sky.

The decision not to have fireworks comes directly from the top. BCCI secretary Jay Shah spoke about it. He said BCCI is very aware of the environment. They talked to the International Cricket Council, or ICC, and decided not to have any fireworks in Mumbai.

Jay Shah also said that BCCI wants to fight environmental issues. They care about the health and safety of cricket fans and everyone else involved.

Adding to this, the Central Pollution Control Board has some numbers. They said Mumbai’s overall AQI was a “moderate” 172, but one area called Bandra Kurla Complex had a high of 260. In Delhi, this October’s air quality was the worst since 2020.

Even Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, noticed this. He posted a picture on Instagram and wrote, “Mumbai, yeh kya ho gaya (Mumbai, what’s happened)?”

No fireworks in World Cup matches in Mumbai and Delhi will take some care of the environment and people’s health. However, stopping fireworks is not an enough solution, we will have to take proper measures.
