US former President Barack Obama has given negative comments to India during a CNN interview. He warned that if India fails to protect the rights of ethnic minorities, there is a strong possibility that the country may start facing internal divisions.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed surprise at former US President Barack Obama’s recent statement regarding minority rights in India under the BJP government. Sitharaman made her remarks during a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi.

She wondered if Obama had forgotten about these incidents when making allegations about the treatment of minorities in India.
The Finance Minister highlighted the recognition received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 13 countries, including six with predominantly Muslim populations, where he was awarded the highest civilian honors.

Sitharaman also mentioned the comments made by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) regarding religious tolerance in India.
While expressing the desire to maintain a positive relationship with the US, she stated her surprise at hearing such statements from the former President.
