Jammu and Kashmir experienced a tense morning as two consecutive earthquakes shook the Baramulla district on Tuesday, sparking widespread alarm. Despite the significant tremors, officials have confirmed that there were no casualties or damage to property.
The first earthquake, registering a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:45 am. The epicenter was pinpointed in Baramulla district, with coordinates of 34.17°N latitude and 74.16°E longitude, and a depth of 5 km. Just seven minutes later, at 6:52 am, a second quake with a slightly lower magnitude of 4.8 was recorded. This tremor also originated in Baramulla, with coordinates of 34.20°N latitude and 74.31°E longitude, at a depth of 10 km.

Although the quakes caused panic across the Kashmir Valley, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Authorities have kept emergency services on standby to address any potential aftershocks or related incidents.
