Azam Khan Gets 2-Year Jail In Hate Speech Case Against PM Modi, CM Yogi

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan has been convicted and sentenced to two years in prison by a Rampur court in a hate speech case.

The case was registered against him during the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign for making derogatory remarks against the Rampur district magistrate and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.

The complaint was filed by an assistant development officer at the local police station after a video of Azam Khan’s speech went viral. This is not the first time Azam Khan has faced legal consequences for hate speech.

He was previously convicted in another hate speech case in 2019 and sentenced to three years in jail, leading to his disqualification from the Uttar Pradesh assembly. However, the conviction was later overturned by a sessions court.

In addition to the hate speech cases, Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam Khan were also convicted and sentenced to two years in jail in February 2023 in connection with a 2008 case involving the assault of public servants during a routine police vehicle check.

Azam Khan, who served as a cabinet minister in the Samajwadi Party government from 2012 to 2017, had been in jail for 27 months before being granted bail by the Supreme Court in a land-grab case in May 2022. He was released after receiving bail in all 81 cases lodged against him.
