Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi declares August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. This announcement comes a day before when India is going to celebrate its 75th Independence Day on August 15.
PM further adds that may this Partition Horrors Remembrance Day keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions & strengthen the spirit of oneness.
Remembering the grieving past, the pain of partition can never be forgotten, especially the memories of people’s struggles and sacrifices during that period. PM Modi also tweeted, Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence.
During the announcement, it was also emphasized that we need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.
The partition between India and Pakistan was a horror story for everyone as it led to bloodshed and violence for years. Pakistan was carved out as a Muslim country after the division of India by the British colonial rule in 1947, and millions of people were displaced and many lakhs of them lost their lives as large-scale rioting broke out.
The idea of religious identity as the basis for Partition has less to do with the Congress and more to do with the ardent advocates of a communal notion of nation-building. V.D. Savarkar of the Hindu Mahasabha and Muhammad Ali Jinnah of the Muslim League. The Muslim League had a firm grasp on the political value of such an idea.
Currently, no details were shared on any memorial events to be held on the day but a year-long series of events connected to the anniversary, ‘Amrit Mahotsav,’ has been lined up. This also includes recording the national anthem by ordinary citizens and uploading them on the Rashtrapati Bhavan website. This will boost citizens with patriotism and the spirit of unity.
