Assam Shelters 133 Bengal People Suffering Panchayat Poll Violence

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that over 100 people from West Bengal have taken shelter in Assam due to the violence surrounding the panchayat elections in West Bengal.

These individuals have been provided shelter in a relief camp in Assam, and the Chief Minister assured them of any necessary humanitarian aid during times of crisis.

West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari expressed gratitude to Himanta Biswa Sarma for providing relief to the opposition party workers from West Bengal who have faced violence during elections.

He specifically thanked Sarma for offering support to BJP workers who frequently encounter poll-related violence.

Sarma responded to Adhikari, emphasizing that the people of West Bengal are valued and respected neighbors to Assam, and they can rely on Assam for any humanitarian aid in times of crisis.

However, West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja criticized Sarma, accusing him of raising a false alarm and creating panic.

Violence erupted during West Bengal’s rural polls, resulting in the death of 15 individuals. Ballot boxes were vandalized, ballot papers were set on fire, and bombs were thrown at rivals in several places.

Among the rioters, most of them were affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The violence has escalated since the announcement of election dates, with the death toll exceeding 30. Repolling was conducted in 696 booths on Monday, recording a voter turnout of 69.85%.
