Assam-Mizoram row: Northeast BJP MPs meet PM, blame Congress for making issue political

On Monday Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visited by 16 BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) MPs from the Northeastern states over an ongoing dispute between neighboring Indian states of Assam and Mizoram. The MPs submitted a memorandum on the border dispute between states and blamed the opposition Congress party for politicizing the conflict.

12 of the MPs who visited Prime Minister are from Assam, two from Arunachal Pradesh, one from Manipur and one from Tripura.

The memorandum submitted by the BJP MPs also lauded the Modi government for carrying out “historic and unparalleled development work in the Northeast.”

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju accused “elements from outside our country” of “fueling violence by making inciting statements” while speaking to media after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The memorandum stated that the BJP MPs were “pained by the frequent disruptions of the Congress, which deny us our Parliamentary privilege of raising pro-people issues from our constituents.”

Assam always wants to keep the spirit of North East alive.”

Assam CM has ordered police to drop the FIR against Mizoram MP K Vanlalvena. But cases filed against 6 government officials from Mizoram will continue to be investigated for their involvement in clashes that killed five Assam police personnel in Cachar district of Assam.

Congress has blamed Central government for its failure in handling the dispute between the two northeastern states. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi has accused Modi government of “double standards” and said that if the condition would be in non-BJP states, the government would have deployed Army and demanded President’s Rule.
