Asian Champions Trophy 2023: India To Counter Malaysia After Beating Japan

The Indian hockey team is set for an exciting showdown in the final match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 against Malaysia. 

After a dominant semifinal win over Japan with a score of 5-0, India’s head coach Craig Fulton highlighted his coaching approach. 

He prefers to teach players during training rather than giving constant instructions during matches. This approach aims to instill ideas and strategies for the team’s betterment. 

The Indian team’s captain, Harmanpreet Singh, also praised Fulton for introducing positive changes to the team’s structure.

The final match between India and Malaysia is scheduled for Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 08:30 PM IST. The Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai will host the match.

In the semifinal against Japan, India showcased an impressive performance. After a goalless first quarter, Akashdeep Singh scored to give India a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. 

Harmanpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh extended the lead to 3-0 by halftime, scoring in the 23rd and 30th minutes, respectively. 

In the third quarter, Sumit’s goal increased India’s lead to 4-0. The final quarter saw Selvam Karthi securing a victory with a goal, resulting in a convincing 5-0 win for India.

The 2023 Men’s Asian Champions Trophy is sponsored by Hero MotoCorp. This is the 7th edition of the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy and organized by the Asian Hockey Federation.

The six teams that participated in the tournament were India, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan and China.

In the semi-finals, India defeated Japan 5-0, while Malaysia defeated South Korea 6-2. India and Malaysia are now going to meet in the final, with India winning 3-2 to claim their third Asian Champions Trophy title.

The top three teams of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 tournament, will be qualified for the 2023 FIH Hockey World Cup.
