Asia Cup will now be held in 2023, venue yet to be confirmed

Days after announcing that Asia Cup 2021 has been cancelled owing to Covid-19 pandemic, the International Cricketing Federation has decided to conduct the much awaited tournament in 2023.

It was difficult for the association to come up with the date as the whole year is packed with previous commitments and even the coming years has a jam packed schedule for the teams. Considering these factors and also the possibility of shift due to changing circumstances of coronavirus, the decision has been fixed to 2023.

Earlier the continental tournament was supposed to be held in Pakistan but the controversies with India led the association to change the venue to Sri Lanka. But since the last one and a half months, Covid-19 cases have been rapidly increasing in the island nation, which essentially led the Sri Lankan cricket association to cancel the event.

All the biggest Asian cricket playing nations have packed schedules for the coming year and to find a window for a long tournament such as Asia Cup would have been an herculean task for the association. The Asian Cricket Council confirmed the information on Sunday.

AOC issued a statement saying, “It would therefore only be feasible for this edition of the tournament to be held in 2023 as there is already an Asia Cup in 2022. Dates for the same will be confirmed in due course,” the ACC said in the statement.”

The board has taken all the situations into consideration and gence decided that the only way to go about it is to postomoen the event. There is a T20 world cup in the October-November window and if the Asian tournament would have gotten a go ahead then it would have a practice for all the teams.

The last time the continental tournament saw its ground was in 2018 and it was scheduled to be held in 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. This year too, it has been postponed and hence it has been decided that it will all together be postponed for two years.
