Apps owned by Facebook go for a 6-hour shutdown, Zuckerburg loses $7 billion

On Monday, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram went for a six-hour blackout proving to be a huge cause of concern for the backend of the prime company as well as the social media users. The three applications partially reconnected to the global internet on Monday afternoon.

The three platforms, owned by Facebook, were in a state of paralysis, as described by experts. The social monitoring group down detector said that this was the largest such failure ever recorded in the internet’s history. After waiting for a long duration, people started to get partial access to Facebook towards evening.

WhatsApp quickly tweeted regarding the major failure issuing apologies to everyone who is unable to use WhatsApp. “We’re starting to slowly and carefully get WhatsApp working again.” The blackout started at around noon and continued for the next six hours. This was not the first time that such an outage happened.

A whistleblower had earlier accused the social media giant of prioritizing profit over toning down hate speech or misinformation on its platform. More than the users or the visitors this was a major blow to businesses who are heavily dependent on the platform. Noting this, Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer tweeted, “To every small and large business, family, and the individual who depends on us, I’m sorry.”

He also added that even now the problem is not 100 percent solved and it may take some time to reach there.

Mark Zuckerburg who is among the richest people in the world also dropped on the list of billionaires. The stocks contributing to the founder’s wealth slid to $120.9 billion, which made him come down below Bill Gates. Since September, Zuckerburg has lost $19 billion of wealth.

It was previously reported by some of the media agencies that Facebook products are the main issue here. The Wall Street Journal published an article confirming that despite Facebook being aware of shortcomings with its products, it continues to operate which has led to a wide range of problems.

The social media platforms owned by Facebook have been downplaying some of the major battles in recent years. Issues about mental health, age, and many other health-related aspects are also falsely spread on these sites. The reports claimed that from the harm to teenage girl’s mental health to misinformation about the January 6 Capitol Riots, Facebook has given a free pass to such socially unacceptable aspects.
