Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo said, “The Board of Directors and I would like to thank Rono for effectively leading our business for almost four years with a steady hand through what has been the most turbulent period in the airline’s history and aviation globally.”

Since 2014, Mr Elbers, 52, has served as the President and CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. He is also a member of the executive committee of the Air France – KLM Group, IndiGo said. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Logistics Management and a Master’s Degree in Business Economics.

Elbers started his career at KLM in 1992 at their Schiphol hub and over time, held several managerial positions in both the Netherlands and overseas in Japan, Greece and Italy, according to the statement.

After he returned to the Netherlands, he was appointed as the Senior Vice President of network and alliances, before he was promoted in 2011 as the Chief Operating Officer, it said.

The airline was recently in news for its careless handling of a teenager with special needs and was later slammed by the Aviation Board for their harsh rebuke and callous treatment.

From a report brought out by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Indigo was asked the following, “The findings of the committee prima facie indicate inappropriate handling of passengers by the Indigo staff thereby resulting in certain non-conformances with the applicable regulations,” said the DGCA, citing the investigation report.  “In view of this, it has been decided to issue a show cause notice to the concerned airline… After hearing their submissions, appropriate action as per law would be taken,” the DGCA said. The airline has been given 10 days to present its explanation.
