Anuskha proves that content is most important in Web Series

As the emerging new breed of director Anushka Sharma knows her rights and wrongs. New to direction and the web series formula she has well understood that ultimately it is content that rules to roost. Her new debut web series on Amazon Prime, ‘Pataal Lok’ has been getting rave reviews. Under her banner Clean Slate Films, the actor turned producer director has been candid about her approach to writers and how they deserve the respect for the scripts they put forward.

The web series deals with the lives of marginalized and victimized castes and sub castes in India.  It pertinently shows their misery and the resulting angst that has eroded the hearts of the youth that hails from these communities. Looking for hope, recognition and sense of belonging, the Season 1 has beautifully portrayed their inner turmoil and how each one of them yet holds compassion as the highest human virtue.

Speaking to the media she agrees that “The OTT platform is an ideal one to flesh out the story and invest in its characters. This does not become possible in feature films where there is limited time. Hence, viewers connect with the characters more as they see more of them. Of course, one has to be sure of the content which one plans to present on the OTT platform.”

Over and above a fresh cast, the content has definitely held the audience together.  For Jaideep Alhawat, an aspiring army officer turned actor, “it was a draining process to be Hathiram Chaudhary. But it was a rewarding role as well. As an actor, one has to learn to show as much as needs to be shown and this character tested my skills on that,” speaking over a zoom interview the new rage of web series admitted.

The mythological and astrological elements in the web series have been used carefully and so has the practice of Buddhist chanting, which in a way shows how the lives of everyone are interconnected, even though we may feel caste and creed divides us. Anushka Sharma continues to delve into the world of production and direction, something she makes clear. She wishes to take her behind the camera career as seriously as her front-of-the-screen persona.
