Anti-Brahmin slogans on JNU walls trigger inquiry

The prestigious, yet controversial Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has once again been engulfed in a mire of hullabaloos after the campus of the university’s School of International Studies and doors of some faculty members were sprayed with graffiti of anti-Brahmin slogans. The administration of JNU has ordered an inquiry into the vandalism while referring the act as “exclusivist tendencies”.

The Vice-Chancellor of JNU has condemned the incident in a statement released by his office and has ordered a probe into the incident. “The Dean, School of International Studies and Grievances Committee have been asked to inquire and submit a report to the VC at the earliest. JNU stands for inclusion and equality. The VC reiterates zero tolerance for any kind of violence on campus,” said Vice-Chancellor Santishree Pandit’s office.

The JNU Teachers’ Forum has also released a statement that reads, “The doors have been spray painted with graffiti inciting caste divide which is nothing but an ugly expression of invective directed at the political allegiance of the victimised teachers.”

Several walls on the campus were painted with anti-Brahmin slogans such as — “Brahmins Leave The Campus”, “There Will Be Blood”, “Brahmin Bharat Chhodo” and “Brahmino-Baniyas, we are coming for you! We will avenge.”

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has condemned the act of vandalism in an obvious act of casteism, accusing the Left of the vandalisation. “ABVP condemns the rampant vandalisation of academic spaces by communist goons. The communists have written abuses on the walls of JNU in the School of International Studies- II building. They have defaced chambers of free-thinking professors to intimidate them,” ABVP JNU President Rohit Kumar was quoted.

Past few years, JNU has emerged as the focal point of violence between ABVP and left-affiliated student bodies. In year 2020, the prestigious university, that has given the country many well known leaders and journalists, was engulfed in mob violence that was conducted by a masked gang, targeting students in three of the campus’ hostels.
