Aman Sehrawat Wins Gold At Asian Wrestling Championships

Aman Sehrawat earned the first gold in 57kg freestyle, while Deepak Mirca won the bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship.

In a historic win for India, Aman Sehrawat secured the country’s first gold medal at the ongoing Asian Championships.

The talented athlete emerged victorious in the 57kg category after defeating Almaz Smanbekov from Kyrgyzstan on Thursday.

In a remarkable display of skill on the senior circuit, Sehrawat emerged victorious in the summit bout against Smanbekov with a score of 9-4 on the penultimate day of the championships.

In a remarkable feat, Sehrawat, a trainee at Delhi’s renowned Chhatrasal Stadium, emerged victorious in the quarterfinals by defeating Japan’s Rikuto Arai with a score of 7-1.

He then went on to secure his place in the finals by defeating China’s Wanhao Zou with a score of 7-4.

Sehrawat secured their second podium finish of the 2023 season, having previously won a bronze medal at the Zagreb Open in February. Last year’s U-23 World Championships saw him emerge victorious.

On Thursday, two additional Indian athletes advanced to the bronze-medal round.

In the ongoing wrestling championship, Deepak Kukna (79kg) and Deepak Nehra (97kg) have unfortunately lost their respective semifinals.

However, they will still have a chance to fight for the bronze medals. On the other hand, Anuj Kumar (65kg) and Mulayam Yadav (70kg) were unable to secure a place in the medal round.

India has secured its 12th medal in the competition with Sehrawat’s gold. In the world of wrestling, the Greco-Roman wrestlers have secured four medals, while female grapplers have impressively grabbed seven.

Deepak secured a bronze medal in the men’s 79kg category after overpowering Tajikistan’s Shuhrat Bozorov 12-1 in the medal match, in a stunning victory.

In a thrilling quarterfinal match, he managed to fend off a formidable challenge from Mongolia’s Byambadorj Bat Erdene, ultimately prevailing with a score of 4-1.

However, his journey was cut short in the semifinals as he suffered a crushing defeat with a score of 0-10 at the hands of Uzbekistan’s Bekzod Abdulrakhmonov.

In a disappointing turn of events, Birmingham Commonwealth Games medallist Deepak Nehra was able to get a bronze medal in the men’s 97kg match. The final score was 9-12, leaving Nehra without a medal in this particular event.
