Alteration In University Syllabus Takes Political Angle in Bihar

A Bihar University named after a politician and the politician’s name was removed from the political science syllabus- is a huge insult to someone’s sensibilities. The latest row is over this and the Bihar administration has had to step in to reverse the insult.

Mr. Jaiprakash Narayan will again feature amidst names of freedom fighters and in political science chapters. Apparently, former CM Lalu Prasad Yadav was extremely upset and had to call up the education minister to express his disdain over the matter and request amendments.

In response, Mr. Vijay Kumar Choudhary gave a statement in the vernacular press saying, “Universities do not have the right to change the syllabus on their own. The state government has to be apprised,” he said. His department’s officials have now also been tasked with finding out if similar changes were made at other universities.

It was discovered that the names of socialist icons Jayaprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia were apparently dropped. Instead, BJP icons like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya and Subhas Chandra Bose were included. This became a huge bone of contention.

Nitish Kumar government is already being called out names from the opposition. Mr. Lalu Yadav’s vernacular tweet was emotional and moving the sentiment of the vote bank. It said, I established a university in the name of Jayaprakash Ji in my ‘karmabhoomi‘ Chhapra 30 years ago.

Now, at this very university, the ‘Sanghi’ Bihar government and officials who follow the Sangh’s ideology are removing the names of JP and Lohia from the syllabus. This cannot be tolerated. The government should immediately take action.

Nitish and Yadav are both followers of Lohia and Narayan. But Nitish belongs to a BJP led NDA both at the Centre and the state.

Choudhary said he talked to Governor Chauhan, who appeared to be in the dark about the changes, though according to protocol, they would have had to go through his office. Further, the minister claimed that JP University did not follow the rules while changing the syllabus.
