Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer was earlier blamed for pushing his religious sentiments and feelings while selecting the players. After this controversy, Ajinkya Rahahne was asked about the issue and he rescinded by saying that he doesn’t know the whole episode so it is better he doesn’t comment on it.
“Sir, I don’t have an idea regarding this issue, what has happened, so I don’t think that I should comment on this topic, because I don’t have an idea,” the vice-captain said during a virtual press conference ahead of the second test against England in Chennai.
Jaffer was accused of pushing his religious inclination when selecting the players during his stint as the coach of Uttarakhand. However, the former cricketer quit the job owing to dispute with some officials in the state association The opening batsman has also rejected all the claims of his bias towards any religion and dismissed his claims of favoring Muslim players over others.
Virat Kohli’s deputy was asked this question due to his experience with Jaffer. He and Jaffer played together for Mumbai and the West Zone along with having played for the Indian Oil Corporation. The duo has quite a lot of experience and bonding in the domestic circuit.
Jaffer has enjoyed a lot of followers on social media platforms, especially on twitter where he from time to time posts updates and information about the sport. He is known for his witty take on different issues and his opinions but owing to this controversy, he took some time off the platform.
It was only on Saturday that the player returned on the platform to express his pleasure in watching the crowd return to the cricket stadium after a long halt. “Very happy to see fans back at the Chepauk. The fans are the heartbeat of our sport. Indian cricket wouldn’t be as big as it is today if not for the constant support of passionate fans,” he tweeted.
Former cricketer and commentator, Anil Kumble, has come out in support of the player. He said that Jaffer has done the right thing by resigning from the post. This was after Jaffer went on to describe how differently he would have favored the players if it was based on religion.
Apart from Kumble, former cricketer Irfan Pathan also came out in support saying that it is unfortunate that he is having to explain all this.
