Air India To Sign Deal For 150 Boeing 737 Max Jets Acquisition

The Tata Group-owned Indian carrier company Air India is close to signing a deal with Boeing Co to acquire up to 150 Boeing 737 Max jets.

Air India is close to placing an order together with Boeing Co to acquire up to 150 737 Max aircraft according to the Economic Times newspaper reported on Saturday Citing sources.

It is believed that the Tata Group-owned Indian carrier is likely to make a formal purchase for 50 of the 737 Max airplanes with the option of picking up to 150, according to the ET report revealed.

Industry sources had stated on July 1 that Air India was moving closer to a decision about the mega-order worth $50 billion at the list price to be divided equally between Airbus and Boeing that included 300 narrowbody and 70 broad body jets.

The rumored order is an opportunity for Boeing that has previously stated that it is looking to expand its operations in India to meet growing demand in the most rapidly growing major aviation market.

Boeing’s most recent mega-order in India was in 2021, when the low-cost airline Akasa reached a deal to purchase 72 737 MAX aircraft, worth almost $9 billion at list prices.

Indian skies have been dominated by cheap airlines which include IndiGo, SpiceJet and AirAsia India which have the most of these operating Airbus narrowbody aircrafts.

SpiceJet is Boeing’s largest customer in India and is the largest customer with an order for 155 MAX aircraft.

Boeing did not respond to requests for response, saying they will “defer the matter to Air India” for a response. Air India did not respond to a request to comment.
