Ahead of festival season, Flipkart plans to hire thousands

Last updated on February 15th, 2023 at 12:42 pm

The e-commerce giant is planning to hire at least 70,000 people across its verticals ahead of its Big Billion Days sale.

With the festive season around the corner, Walmart-owned Flipkart said its flagship Big Billion Days event will generate over 70,000 direct and lakhs of indirect seasonal jobs. Recruitment will happen along its supply chain for the roles of packers, sorters, delivery executives, etc while seller partner locations and kiranas, 50,000 of whom will be onboarded, will benefit from the indirect demand for labour. Ancillary industries like vendor locations and freight partners will also see job creation, the company said in a statement.

With the entire ecosystem gearing up for the festive sale, the supply chain will have to expand and be strengthened so that millions of buyers can shop seamlessly on the platform. E-commerce players make significant investments towards this end to ramp up capacity to handle the jump in orders. This means scaling up their storage, human resources, training, packing and delivery. Last year, Flipkart and Amazon said they will be created over 1.4 lakh temporary jobs across the supply chain, customer support and last-mile connectivity.

What is significant here is the training programmes instituted ahead of the hiring that creates thousands of job-ready people who are familiar with the e-commerce ecosystem and how supply chains work. The direct hires go through a training programme through classroom and e-learning, in the areas of supply chain management, customer service, safety and sanitisation, etc. Additional training is also conducted on warehouse management, packaging, etc for seller partners like MSMEs and artisans who usually start gearing up for the season months in advance. These hiring and upskilling processes are done in accordance with the government’s National Skill Development Mission.
