Agnikul Cosmos Delays Private Rocket Launch

In a move driven by caution, Agnikul Cosmos, the IIT-Madras incubated startup, has announced the postponement of its highly anticipated private rocket launch, a day before the scheduled liftoff. The company cited “certain minor observations from the full countdown rehearsals last night” as the reason for the delay, exercising an abundance of caution. The new launch date and time for the private rocket launch will be communicated to the public shortly. Despite the setback, the company expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support it has received.

Pioneering 3D-printed Engine and Sub-Orbital Flight

The SubOrbital Technological Demonstrator (SOrTeD) is a single-stage rocket designed to test Agnikul’s proprietary Agnilet engine in an actual flight scenario. This sub-orbital launch aims to propel payloads into the upper atmosphere or near-space, without achieving orbit around the Earth. Notably, the Agnilet engine represents a significant technological advancement, as it is entirely 3D-printed as a single component, departing from the traditional manufacturing process employed by most launch vehicles.

Groundbreaking Private Launch Platform for Agnikul’s Rocket

In a first for the Indian private space industry, Agnikul Cosmos will utilize its launch platform at the country’s premier spaceport in Sriharikota for the private rocket launch. Unlike conventional launches that rely on guide rails to determine the initial trajectory, Agnibaan SOrTeD will lift off vertically and follow a pre-programmed flight path, marking a significant milestone in the privatization of space endeavours.

If successful, the SOrTeD rocket is expected to reach an altitude of approximately 20 kilometres, nearly twice the cruising altitude of commercial airliners, before descending back to Earth. This achievement would demonstrate the capabilities of the Agnilet engine and pave the way for future missions, but the company has exercised caution by postponing the private rocket launch for now.

Trailblazing Private Space Exploration with Caution

Agnikul Cosmos’ private rocket launch follows in the footsteps of Skyroot Aerospace, the only other private company to have conducted a sub-orbital flight in 2022. As the Indian private space industry continues to evolve, Skyroot Aerospace is preparing for its first orbital mission later this year, further solidifying India’s position in the global space race. However, Agnikul Cosmos has demonstrated caution by postponing its private rocket launch.

The emergence of private space companies like Agnikul Cosmos, with their private rocket launches, represents a significant paradigm shift from the past when space exploration was exclusively the domain of government agencies like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This transition towards privatization not only fosters innovation and competition but also opens up new avenues for commercial space endeavours, propelling India’s space ambitions to new heights and positioning the country as a key player in the global space industry.
