After the 10th world cup anniversary, Gautam Gambhir recall these moments

Cricket has always united people in India. The 2011 World Cup win had generated a new ray of hope for the cricket fans and enthusiasts who began picturing India among the top cricket playing nations.

Cricket enthusiasts are well aware of how Indian team won the World Cup and no one can forget the 97 that came out of Gautam Gambhir. Even though Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the one to hit the winning six but it only came after the match winning effort of Gambhir. Fans, since then, have wondered if he ever regretted not hitting a century or losing out so close from 100.

The former Indian batsman was dismissed for three runs short of a hundred against Sri Lankan great Thisara Perara in the World Cup. It was a tricky time when Gambhir walked into the crease. It was after explosive batsman Virender Sehwag got out for zero.

Sachin too departed early resulting in Gambhir to take charge. Gambhir along with the then emerging talent Virat Kohli batted to add 83 important runs but after Kohli departed, it was all on Gambhir. Gambhir and MS Dhoni stitched a 1090run partnership to bring the team back on track.

Gambhir talked about the experience to Cricket.com. Yesterday was the perfect opportunity for the former cricketer to speak about it and he did. “I guess the human mind is their best friend and their biggest enemy as well. When you start thinking about the future, it might probably come back to bite you really bad. That’s exactly what happened to me.”

He stressed that all he could think about was getting 27 on board. At least that was his first thought till 97. But when he saw 97 on the board, he suddenly got into this realisation and started thinking that he is three runs away from the final century. According to the cricketer turned politician, he started thinking about ways of celebrating or whether it was going to be your moment or you are going to be the first Indian to score a World Cup final century.”

Since then Gambhir became the second leading run getter of the tournament with 393 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar, who was leading with 482. According to him, the only thing different he would have wanted was to be able to stay at the crease till the very end.

“The only regret I have is not missing the hundred but failing to finish off the game,” Gambhir added. He added that not only him but everyone else should aso stay in the moment and not think about it much.

It was the other case that bothered the cricketer much more than this. He was rather concerned about the possibility of India not winning or losing because of him. It would have disappointed him much more, he stressed.
