After much delay, Covaxin gets WHO’s approval

Hyderabad -Bharat Biotech manufactured Covaxin has finally got the approval of the World Health Organization on Wednesday. It is India’s first indigenous Covid vaccine. After it was denied by many countries and organizations, it  is a huge step for the vaccine to get approval from the WHO.

The most important factor in approving Covaxin is the trust factor that people will have on the vaccine’s credibility. It will also help in removing uncertainty around overseas travel by Indians who have been administered with Covaxin.

Talking about the same, the WHO director Dr tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted that he is glad to see more vaccines being granted by the organisation for emergence use.

“The more products we have to fight #COVID19, the better, but we must keep up the pressure to deliver #VaccinEquity & prioritize access to vulnerable groups who are still waiting for their 1st dose,” he added.

In India, Covaxin is among six other vaccines to have gotten emergency use authorizations from the country’s drug regulator. It is being used for nationwide inoculation programs along with Covishield and Sputnik V. The

The Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Biotech Krishna Ella also emphasised the importance of getting a grant from the WHO saying that it is a significant step in ensuring global access to Covaxin.
