After days of speculation, Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh resigns

Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has resigned following months of speculations. This is after last week saw a turmoil within the party when top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party started visiting as observers to the states giving rise to all sorts of speculations.

On Tuesday, the final announcement came from the office of the chief minister. The former state minister said that it is wholly due to a party like BJP that and he thanked the party admission for entrusting with the responsibility. He also stressed that it was a collective decision.

Former Chattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh and Rajya Sabha member Dushyant Gautam were also sent to Dehradun to review the whole matter and it is the collective decision of the party to take the call, stressed Rawat. “Now that party has taken a collective decision to entrust the responsibility of state chief ministership to some other leader.”

He gave resignation nine days ahead of his completion of four years as the head of the state. He gave a two line resignation to the governor Baby Rani Maurya and later conducted a presser where he said that he was grateful to the ruling party and people for giving him this opportunity to serve.

As per reports in the media, the concerns about holding onto the position grew after the visit of party observers that submitted a report questioning the leadership of Rawat. They reportedly said that he was being tardy in conducting the ‘Chardham Yatra’ projects to not conduct meeting solving issues of his own party men.

Rawat came under scanner after he faced corruption allegations where the Uttarakhand High Court demanded CBI to take charge in the case and review the matter further. The demand was stayed by the Supreme Court later.

The Union Home minister for education Ramesh Pokhriyal also secretly visited the state and held a party meeting, which essentially proved to be the deciding factor leading Rawat to resign on February 9. He was asked to come to Delhi and on Monday evening, the party head JP Nadda gave Rawat the marching orders.

A lot of leaders are in the race of holding the position which includes veterans like Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, Satpal Maharaj from the state and also Member of Parliament Anil Baluni and Ajay Bhat.
